What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it's an easy way for you to keep
up with the news and information as well as allowing you an easy way to download
content from websites when it is made available. RSS also helps you avoid browsing
or searching for information on numerous websites by actually visiting them. Now
the content you want to read, hear or view can be delivered directly to your computer.
This content is called a "feed."
RSS is written in a language known as XML or eXtensible Markup Language. This
is the reason that you see RSS buttons labeled with the XML icon.
What do I need to read, hear, or view content in the feed?
You will need a RSS reader, which is a software program that collects and displays
RSS feeds.
Where can I get a RSS Reader?
Some browsers, such as the current versions of Firefox, Opera and Safari have
built in RSS readers. These browsers can check for RSS feeds for you when you
visit a website, and display an icon when they encounter one. This can make subscribing
to RSS feeds very easy.
Not using a browser that supports RSS? There are many RSS readers available
online; some are free and others you will have to purchase.
For a listing of available readers, visit the Google
RSS Directory
How do I subscribe to an RSS feed?
Choose which reader you want to use and install it onto your computer. You will
notice that the reader is going to have it's own way of adding a new feed, follow
the directions for your specific reader.
Many RSS readers will work similiar to the following:
- Click on the link or small XML button near the feed you want. You'll see a
page displaying XML code.
- From your web browser's address bar, copy the full link to the XML file.
- Paste the copied URL into the "Add New Channel" or "Subscribe" section of
the reader. The RSS feed will start to download new content and track future updates
on the site.
OR
- Right-click on the XML or RSS icon.
- Choose "Copy Link Location" in Firefox or "Copy Shortcut" in IE.
- Paste the copied Link/Shortcut into the "Add New Channel" or "Subscribe" section
of the reader. The RSS feed will start to download new content and track future
updates on the site.
