Biographical Sketch – Frank Talamantes, 2002
Frank Talamantes of the University of California, Santa Cruz gave the 9th Annual E.E. Just Lecture at the ASCB Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Dr. Talamantes’ research is in the area of biochemical endocrinology focusing on the endocrine function of the placenta, hormonal control of mammary carcinogenesis and on the structure and regulation of expression of the growth hormone receptor.
Talamantes received his BA in Biology from the University of St. Thomas, Houston Texas, his MA in Biology from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas and his Ph.D. in endocrinology from the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a faculty member at UC Santa Cruz since 1974 and is currently a full professor of Endocrinology. In addition to classroom teaching. he has served as the major professor to 24 graduate students and the advisor of 23 postdoctoral fellows. His distribution of reagents generated in his laboratory to investigators throughout the world has been of tremendous value for investigators to advance the prolactin/growth hormone/placental lactogen field. He has also served on or chaired several NIH study sections. In July 2000, Dr. Talamantes was appointed to the position of Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
He recently received the award for “Outstanding Leadership and contributions to Education in the Hispanic Community” from the American Association for Higher Education and in 1998, he was selected as one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics” by Hispanic Business Magazine.
