The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) is pleased to announce the appointment of John D. Aitchison, PhD, as the next Editor-In-Chief of its flagship journal—Molecular Biology of the Cell  (MBoC)—beginning January 1, 2025. MBoC has served the cell biology community for more than 30 years, providing researchers with constructive feedback and a platform to showcase their work to a global audience of cell scientists.

Aitchison holds joint appointments at Seattle Children’s Research Institute as co-Director of the Center for Global Infectious Disease, and at the University of Washington as a Professor in the School of Medicine. Aitchison was a founding faculty member at the Institute for Systems Biology where he served as Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Integrative Biology. He was also President of Seattle Biomedical Research Institute Center for Infectious Disease Research before joining Seattle Children’s. Aitchison has a long history of editorial service in cell science.

“As the premier scientific publication of the ASCB, MBoC is dedicated to inspiring and facilitating groundbreaking research in cell biology. It is an honor and privilege to lead the journal through its next chapter, addressing challenges while promoting cell biology on a global scale.” says Aitchison, “Working closely with the Editorial Board, and the cell biology community, my priority is to ensure MBoC continues to build on its considerable legacy and enhance its prominence”.

MBoC welcomes submissions of Research Articles, Brief Reports, Reviews, and Methods and Resources papers, and publishes articles that present conceptual advances of broad interest and significance within all areas of cell biology.

Aitchison continues, “I invite the cell biology community to join in shaping the future of MBoC, ensuring it remains a leading voice in the field. Together, we will navigate the evolving landscape of scientific publishing, maintaining the journal’s enduring relevance and impact.”

“ASCB is delighted to welcome John Aitchison as the new Editor-in-Chief of MBoC,” says Sandra A. Murray, ASCB President, and Professor in the Department of Cell Biology, School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh. “Dr. Aitchison’s extensive research, leadership, and editorial experience across a breadth of cell biology, along with his fresh perspective and vision for MBoC, position him well for taking the journal to the next level. Under his leadership, the journal will continue to advance the key values of ASCB by providing researchers with constructive feedback and a platform to showcase their work to a global audience of cell scientists.”
